cucumbers
« on: August 19, 2012, 15:53 »
I have a couple of cucumbers that have been on the plant so long that they have gone yellow!
Does this mean they will not taste good, or would they be ok for relish/chutney etc.

Thanks
Elaine

I wouldn't waste the ingredients making them into anything now. They've gone to seed and that's what you'll find inside - loads of big seeds. And the flavour will be more bitter as well.

Pull them off now so they don't stop the plant from making more cukes.

Sorry to hi-jack a thread, but I have a similar cuke question.

Mine has been cropping nicely, but now some half grown cukes have developed a patchy, whitish tinge rather than a nice green colour. They are not full grown and the white is not something which will rub off. Other than that they seem happy enough. The lower leaves have given up the ghost and I've removed them as they have withered.

Thanks Trillium. I have removed them already so it's the compost heap for them!

I'm pretty sure its a weather problem and there's nothing you can do. If there's one large enough to eat, I'd give it a nibble and see how it tastes but I don't think it will be nice. You might have to sacrifice those to the compost.
