sweetcorn - hurrah
« on: July 28, 2012, 18:08 »
Finally picked the first lot: 5 cobs. So excited as its one of the veg I look forward to each year. And more to come as I staggered the planting out a little again so they dont all come at once. Especially nice to have some given some of the disasters this year

WOW, what variety are you growing to have such early cobs!?

With the poor weather mine are a tad behind where they should be this year, but still wouldn't have been anywhere near producing cobs this early!  well done to you

Ian A, please put us out of our misery - are yours a mini-cob type or are they under cover? (be careful how you answer - there could be a sudden house-building explosion near Chichester!)  ::)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

just normal sweetcorn, "Lapwing" - not mini ones

they're not undercover - they are simply in the allotment, with one side of the sweetcorn block backing onto the greenhouse.

I tried something a little differently with them this year: sowed them in the greenhouse about a month earlier than I usually do so, and this year carefully transplanted them into larger pots in the greenhouse so when they went out they were very well established. And then planted them out.

Having had two miserable years without my sweetcorn producing anything, I have eight in the greenhouse and three outside. The greenhouse ones are thriving and I tap the stalk to help with pollination. The outside ones have picked up and are about half the size, but may do something, but no tassels yet. The variety is "Swift."
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.
