gardening year so far.
« on: July 27, 2012, 17:51 »
have been digging up fair sized and delicious earlies for a few weeks now. runner beans plants small and really a waste of time. new rhubarb crowns producing well. leaving them alone for 2 years. pumpkin fruit on plant in greenhouse growing, shallots are mostly ok, still green stalked, garlic -should have a few good bulbs from an 8 ft row. jerusalem artichokes growing ok, onions-not very big bulb wise, but look like they're growing well, maincrop tatties are rooster-growing good above ground, strawberries have finished producing-variety elsanta-peppers in greenhouse small but still growing, courgette just starting to flower. weather has improved.

I know everyone's saying it's been a disaster this year but overall things on my patch are not doing too badly. The weather has been dire and some yields are down but some are also up on previous years. I've had white rot on onions, rust on garlic, chocolate spot on beans, botrytis on strawberries and now have late blight to contend with but I'm not downhearted. Tipped out a 17l polypot of spuds today and got over 5lbs of lovely clean Vivaldi, some big enough for bakers. Cabbages and radishes have been exceptional so they obviously don't mind a good soaking.

I do feel a bit sorry for those newcomers to growing who started this year. They really have had a trying time.
