Lump?? Not Eggbound------- Tumour!!
« on: July 26, 2012, 19:55 »
I thought my Ancona was egg bound as she hasnt laid for a week.  I can feel a lump near her vent that the other laying hens dont have. Ive tried holding her in warm water for 20mins and  I have also tried holding her over a bowl of hot steam.  Both produced nothing. I decided to try the next method of rubber glove and vaseline  but could feel no egg.  She is not showing the signs of egg bound, i.e. not sitting down or walking funny and she is eating and drinking Ok.  She used to be high up in the pecking order   but lately she seems to be getting pecked a bit by the others and seems to want to be on her own.  I can still feel the lump. She is a relatively young hen, less than a year.  Is there something else it could be?   Thanks  Paul

It could be a tumour :(

If it is still there after no eggs for a week, I would take her to a vet.  It could be that it is a stuck egg, and the vet can give her an injection of oxytocin which will help things along :)

Took her back to the breeder and unfortunately it is a tumour.  She said she is fine otherwise and not to cull her yet  as she is still eating & walking etc  OK.  Just got to watch her.  She may lay again or may not and she could live a day or a year. Poor old  (well not so old actually)  Zsa Zsa!!!
