Potatoes dying back
« on: July 26, 2012, 17:11 »
Is it too early for maincrop potato haulms to be dying back? Or might I have blight?

I dug one up yesterday and found a few decent sized tubers (Desiree), so am wondering if its just the plant coming to the end of it's natural cycle.

If you planted them from around mid-March they probably are about ready. :)

Hmm, a closer look last night shows that they are not going yellow, just brown, and on the underneath of the leaves there is a whitish are on the surface of the leaves bordering the brown patches. So blight it is. At least two nearby plots have the same thing. I assume the dry weather this last few days is a bonus, as it hasn't left all the plants a rotting smelly mess, but I had better cut the haulms off tonight and get rid of them, and plan on digging up the potatoes in a few weeks time.

Sounds a good plan Robert

At least you know that you have some decent potatoes there though  :D
