Annoying rhubarb
« on: July 19, 2012, 21:58 »
Earlier in the summer, I daren't pull many sticks from my rhubarb. It's about 3 years old now, but there weren't that many stems and those stems were generally a bit skinny. Now we're past the last pulling date, the plant has suddenly gone berserk and grown huge, with lovely thick stems. How annoying is that? I hope it's not going to do that every year. No idea what variety it is, but I bought it from a local garden centre so it's likely one of the old traditional varieties, like Timperley or Victoria.

I pulled a few more sticks yesterday, cos mine had suddenly put on a growth spurt  ::)

It needs a lot more sugar, cos it's more acidic at this time of year, but it's fine in crumble  :D

Oh, maybe I'll give it a try then. What I really wanted to do was try that rhubarb cake recipe on this site, because is looks lush. Maybe extra demerara will do the trick :)

i harvest sticks when i want them but i always leave 3/4 of plant untouched.
If I didnt it would just take over my plot
my last harvest last year was mid sept
I just give it a handfull of Blood fish and bone  and a mulch of compost in early spring and away it goes.

I've just been mulching mine with lawn mowings all year and it obviously likes it.

Welcome, syks grower.
I do the same as you. If the plant looks healthy I pull a few sticks, but make sure that there are plenty left to keep the plant in good condition.

As long as there are plenty of leaves and sticks left to feed up the crown, I am quite happy to just keep on pulling a few, particularly all through the jamming season as a nice green extra acidic thick stick mixed in to the elderberries,  blackberries etc mash adds that lovely welcome sour "yowzah"  to my jellies.

As for my rhubarb bakewell - as long as I can still spot enough thin but red stalks, I'll keep tugging them.   Even from my 'specials' which have been allowed to rest since their forced sticks were harvested way back.

As long as I give each crown it's own rich treat when it drops into hibernation, they seem to let me get away with it.

Cant find the use by date on my rhubarb, should have thought it was natures way of extending the season as it was so slow to start growing in the first place.

I like the sound of that - any chance of a recipe?
