aagh annoying wind
« on: May 10, 2014, 20:13 »
Just been up to the plot and found several of my broad beans flattened by the wind, snapped off at the ground. Looked like a scale model of hurricane damage. The UK's weather really sucks at times. Several wheelie bins have blown over as well. Wasn't expecting it to be this windy, was very tiring when cycling.

Just come back from my plot and the broad beans look bad, I don't think they have snapped but they don't look good  :(

We get quite high winds here, although thankfully this weekend hasn't been too bad.  As a result, I routinely stake anything that is likely to grow higher than about a foot!  A faff, I know, but worth it.  All my broad beans are securely tied to bamboo sticks and this has helped stop them snapping in the past.  Don't know if this is any use to you, although I guess it's too late for the beans that have already snapped. :(

Saw another broad bean plant blown flat and snapped at the base so have been round the plot collecting canes and staking the remainder. Fingers crossed there won't be any more casualties and I will actually get a crop.

I was trying to sow seeds outdoors!  :nowink:  My late mother's wise words came back to me "Never sow seeds in a gale"

Me too. My neighbour downwind might get a few plants he wasn't expecting!

And I too was propping up broad beans against the gale.

We seem to get this sort of wind at this time of year a lot recently. I used to grow Malling admiral raspberries, but almost every year at about this time when they had sent out long branches with flowers on, thw wind would batter them :( despite being tied up to support wires. I changed to a less suceptible variety now with shorter branches, just hope they taste as good.

Holy heck, it got worse than wind today, we had a severe 10 minute hailstorm, about 1" fell and it was setting car alarms off!

Particularly not parsnip seed ...
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
