how can I get rid of chick weed?
« on: July 19, 2012, 15:39 »
I  inherited the blooming stuff from some horse manure, it's in 2 beds and its getting on my nerves I put weed killer down in April and the darn stuff still came back, its awful you cant pull it up as it just tears at the roots
some people are like slinkys......they're really good for nothing, but they still bring a smile to your face as you push them down the stairs!!

Just pull it and leave it where it is - it rots down quickly and feeds the soil.

It is also edible.

Keep hoeing it off, it's not the same plants coming back, it's more seeds germinating  :(

I have loads this year as well  ::)

Not being cursed with any of the really nasty weeds like marestail and bindweed I rate chickweed as the most annoying of my collection - as starry says it easily snaps off rather than pulling out in one piece, and it seeds like lightning if you turn your back for a moment!

Slices off pretty easily with a sharp hoe but only when the surface is dry (ha ha!)  :nowink:
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

That's the problem though isn't it Jay?  When the surface is dry, most of the weeds die off lying on the ground, but in this weather they re-root so easily.

Chickweed is easy to pull up though if you find where the root is as it creeps along so much.

I think anyone who could potentially confuse chickweed with Yellow Pimpernel has probably already choked to death on a marrow believing it was a tomato!

(Always best to be safe than sorry, though.)  :)

I'm thinking about liquid feeds now but I presume that chickweed could be used in much the same way that we we use nettles or comfrey to make a liquid feed, but which veg would it be good for?

I believe that comfrey's, and presumably also nettle's 'USP' is that they are deep rooted so they can reach and store nutrients unavailable to more shallow-rooted plants, so on that basis I wouldn't expect chickweed to have any more 'goodness' in it than any other annual weed.
OK to compost though (unless it's already run to seed! )
