Another cuke quandry.
« on: July 18, 2012, 20:56 »
My cuke was doing well. Styx F1.  First few cumbers very nice tasted and well plump. Now all the upper cukes seem to be shrivelling and dying off. Watering is ok and humidity is good. Leaves look happy enough. Any ideas?

Have you been feeding the cukes - I use normal tomato feed and find it works quite well.

Back to blaming the weather then  ;)  - mine have been slow to grow but are doing not too bad now.

Some of mine are getting to about 3" long and then just turning yellow at the flower end and shrivelling up and even getting signs of mould on them. Some of the leaves are going manmky as well now.

Not all cucumbers are the same - Marketmore are a ridge type and should have male and female flowers - as with courgettes and other squashes aborted fruits are usually caused by lack of pollination, although of course duff weather can't be ruled out either, especially if the whole plant is looking miserable.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Can you try increasing the humidity to deter them.

not with the high risk of botrytis on the tomatoes! I'd rather no cukes than lose all the tomatoes.

I was very surprised considering how humid it has been lately, and my greenhouses aren't being closed up at night. Perhaps they haven't read their write up

I have found that lots of pests seem not to stay abreast of the latest literature on their subject

My cukes must have had a bullworker bought as a pressie. No more are they small and shrivelling and dying, they are large and lusty and doubling in size overnight. Gert big long things, and plenty of 'em. Lots of really healthy side shoots going bonkers too. All with cukes forming on them. At this rate I'll be able to supply ASDA from this one plant.
