« on: July 11, 2012, 19:41 »
I have 2 small green balls growing on my maris bard foilage
What are they ?

I am guessing seed ?

Which comes on to my next question.

How do you get the seed potatoes which i planted to start the process off ?

You guessed right.

Seed potaotoes - they grow the same way that you grow yours to eat  ;)

They only use the proper seeds when they are trying to develope another variety.

And don't eat the ones on your foliage - they are poisonous
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

If you look at them they look like tomatoes indicating they are the same family.

Just a bit of info.

So how does one get the seed potatoes i buy to plant ?
I would love to get all costs of growing spuds to zero if thats possible for next year ?

The only way i can think off is keeping a load of maris bards from my crop till next year ?

Potatoes are the one crop which it is advised you do not use your own saved tubers.

You generally cannot tell visually whether they are infected, and thus whether you will introduce or spread disease to not just your own plot but the rest of the site.

All seed tubers sold in the EU have to be certified virus free because of the risk to our productivity from introduced disease.

The time to get them is in the early spring, either through a local lotty association, or a garden centre.  You can get them through the post / online but P&P prices are exorbitant.

I would advise you buy proper seed tubers rather than risk it by some challenge to have a zero spend.

Yer man Yorkie is right.

If you do the maths: a few quid for good spuds vs bad spuds and a lot of money plus angry people with pitchforks

Thanks yorkie  :D
Thats another idea blown out the water then
Oh i also found out on the costs of seed potatoes on ebay
I paid about 8 pounds in total for 20 maris bard seed pots.
As my garden center never does maris bard.
1 week later i go to my garden center and they have in maris bard for 1st time ever.
I grab a bag quickly for 2.95 and there was 44 tubers in it
