Lots of tomatoes-no fruit
« on: July 09, 2012, 23:32 »
I have grown Gardener's Delight, Brandywade, Olive and Tigerella tomatoes with an early start in Feb. The latter variety is supposed to be the earliest to fruit. Not a single one. They are in the greenhouse, quite a few flowers but no fruit.

Does this mean it's a good chance I won't get any ripe toms again this year ?

Are you opening the doors so either wind or bees can pollinate the toms?

If not, you might want to get a fine artists paintbrush out and do some pollinating before it's too late.

don't give up hope. i didn't have a single tomato until 4 days ago and now there are loads of them. I don't know if it's linked but a week ago I went round all my plants and got rid of a lot of little side shoots and also gave them all a good shake.

Tapping the canes  is supposed to release pollen, I do that when I remember  ::)

Yes my morning ritual is to open the greenhouse door and tap the canes especially early in the season, I also grow poached egg flowers to attract the pollinators

I have some marigolds in there to keep aphids down and attract insects. Tried growing poached egg flower but all shriveled and went thin and whispy  :(

I always take the side shoots out of my toms.

I don't even have flowers on my outdoor tomatoes and I'm not giving up hope (yet)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

A week ago I would have agreed that it looks grim but I have a few fruit in the greenhouse on Garden Delight. I painted with a brush without success but my partner locked a bee in there for the afternoon last week and that seems to have done the trick.

All the same it has been hard.
