British Queens
« on: July 09, 2012, 11:42 »
My first year of growing potatoes and I have a couple of questions:

On Saturday I dug up a couple of my British Queens plants. Lots of lovely white potatoes but they aren’t very big. The largest is about the size of an unround golf ball. Has the persistent rain affected their growth or is their size normal?

I boiled a few for my lunch and they have a really nice creamy taste but the skins split whilst boiling. Is boiling not recommended for British Queens?

New potatoes should be small, if you want bigger ones leave them another couple of weeks ;)
The weather seems to have set them back a few weeks, this year.

Steaming is good for new pots, or cook them very gently in the saucepan but for less time than shop ones.

Thanks mum. Not all of the plants have turned yellow yet so hopefully these will produce the bigger ones. The reason why I dug up a couple of plants is because I thought they were dying.  One quick question. When the plants turn yellow and start to die back is that the stage where the potatoes stop growing?

British Queen is a lovely flavoured and versatile variety. They even make good chips. ;)
