What can I still plant on my new plot?
« on: July 02, 2012, 07:55 »
Hi folks, I'm brand new here and brand new to growing anything more than cacti! In march, three days after I had a serious knee injury, my friend who had been promising me a share of his allotment when he got to the top of the five year waiting list, finally got the call.

So now I can finally walk well enough to negotiate the paths and actually reach the ground and kneel again, and have missed most of the fun! I'm a complete novice and have a lot of weed pulling to do, but am keen to get something in the gound. So far my husband's put in a half dozen strawberry plants and some maris pipers, all of which seem to be doing well.

But what else can I still plant this late in the year?

There is lots you can still plant.  Lettuce, beetroot, swede, turnips, autumn carrots, kale, chard, leaf beet, radish and pak choi would be my choice.

You might still get away with courgette, squash and French beans but only if the weather bucks up a bit.

Good luck with your half plot.

I've still got to sow my winter greens for next sping, cabbage and caulis.

Leek, brassica seedlings (bought), plus I'd go for anything as long as the weather warms up - nothing lost!
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Welcome Mrs Pea,

I have a new plot too after waiting four and half years for it,  but most of my veg are grown in the garden at the moment because the allotment is in a shocking state. Raspberries and bindweed have gone beserk!

It's not too late for leeks is it?

It isn't too late to plant leeks in the ground, but it is too late to start them off from seed.  If you can buy some ready grown plants then fine.

I've read somewhere that you can eat bindweed. I wonder if it goes well with raspberries?

Thanks so much everyone! Keep the suggestions coming!
