Leeks after peas and beans?
« on: July 01, 2012, 13:10 »
My peas and broad beans are coming to the end of their cropping life and I am starting to clear patches on the lottie where they are. I do have other broad beans and peas stil growing but wondered if I can put leeks in where the bare patches are appearing?
If that is OK, should I add anything to the soil before putting the leeks in?
I have my own cement mixer and not afraid to use it!!

You'd have a job getting much down to the level where the leek roots are going, unless you add a sprinkle down the dibber hole  :)

You could rake in some FB&B before dibbing  ;)

typo error- it hard to type with a cat half on the keyboard  ::)

I put my leeks in where the spuds come out.

You have got a pea and bean harvest????????
Anyway - back to the leeks. A gentle sprinkling of blood, fish and bone or just bonemeal around and over the dibber hole should suffice as the hole will be filled in eventually by soil from rain etc, so should feed the leek roots.

I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Thanks all, great advice as always.
My only concern with waiting until the spuds come out is that the leeks are pencil thick already and so should be  dibbed now?
Not sure why you are surprised that I have a pea and bean  harvest Goosegirl.

Although it hasn't been the best we have been a bit more fortunate with the weather down here in Kent. After all, we do live in the "Garden of England" :)
Paul, Andrew, Kevin, Galen - My parents got bored of normal names in the end!

well, I have a pea harvest, but I was surprised at a bean harvest  :D

Each plot/garden has it's own microclimate though and yana is obviously lucky with hers. Where 's the jealous smiley when you want it  ;)

So many people on here have had a really poor germination of them, although my broads were ok until they got battered by the winds here. My first row of peas in May resulted in two plants; second row - slow but there. Dwarf French beans - I have 5 plants in the g'house, none came up outside sown late May.
