shampoo for chickens?
« on: July 01, 2012, 12:29 »
Hello everyone hope your all well. Can anyone tell me if I can use TeaTree Shampoo for cats and dogs on my chickens to help rid them of mites?
I have totally steam cleaned, dried, aired then used the appropriate lotion for mites on their house, grounds and perches also dusted the hens again with the special dust, and yet within days I come in to find the nasty little critters crawling on my arms...I am at my wits end, even more now as it looks like my house cats appear to have picked them up from me Grrr. I have just aquired some Teatree shampoo for the cats and wondered is it worth a go on my birds?? My hens have not regrown the head and mid rift feathers since last years moult

See your vet as he/she may well prescribe some for you.  It would be worth it to get rid of this troublesome pest  :)

Frontline works brilliantly, it's off license so best to get some from your vet as CQ suggests. Some people find the spray easier to use. I find if I wait til the hens have gone to bed they're so much easier to handle and treat.

Have you also tried stopping the mites in their tracks LITERALLY by smearing vaseline into the corners and on the perch?

As well as using a blowtorch in the hen house which gave a very satisfying popping sound with each and every mite that was torched, I smeared petroleum jelly (doesn't have to be the expensive stuff, just buy a big tub of regular petroleum jelly from a discount store like Superdrug or Savers and smear a blob of it wherever the mites are hiding in cracks.

Next time I blowtorch the place (carefully, I might add) the jelly just melts and runs further into the cracks but this will have already stopped enough mites from getting to your girls and eventually without being able to feed the mites will die (although this could take several months if you don't help them along a bit)

i add a few drops of tea tree oil mixed well into the sand in my quails sand bath as well as diatom powder.
i have been doing it for months with no adverse effects.
Im not sure how you would do it with chickens as my chickens just dig a big hole(s) in the garden, they dont have a man made dust bath.
I frontline my chooks and use plenty of garlic
Never use neat tea tree oil without diluting.
If the mites are still in the hen house and you have tried everything else, have a look at the bug bombs

It sounds as though you mean red mite, in which case shampooing won't help as they do not live on the hen. There is some good advice above :)
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!
