Chillies & Grow Bags
« on: June 24, 2012, 10:30 »
I've grown chillies from seed for the first time this year.  I have quite a few (around 25), and was thinking of transplanting them to growbags.  However, when I used the search box on here it said they do better in 8-10" pots.  Any comments/advice gratefull received from ayone who's tried either/both  :)

I have tried both ways.

Grown in growbags personally I found the chillies smaller and more prolific, BUT not as hot.

Grown in pots there were slightly fewer chillies per plant, but they were certainly hotter.

It was done as a comparison a few years ago when we actually did have a summer!!!.

My reasoning for hotter fewer chillis in pots was that the plants became potbound slightly quicker and dried out slightly sooner than the growbags. Therefore they were slightly stressed, which made them hotter. I have also been told in the dim and distant past you need to treat 'em mean once they have grown and not molly coddle them.

I'm sure however there will be differing opinions  :)
I was put on this earth to accomplish a certain number of things; right now I am so far behind I will never die.

Glad I asked!  Does the 'no molly coddling' rule include feeding?  i.e. are they better without?

A little bit of feed but not too much if that makes sense. Allow to dry out between waterings seems to help too. Tomatoes by comparison are molly coddled  :)

definitely treat em mean if you like em hot!

Watering until they are succulent results in milder chillies.
