Yes, lemon thorns are vicious.  Local legend has it that a chap from the next town once got caught in the knuckle by a lemon spina and died from it two days later.

The fruit take ages to turn yellow.  The trick is to leave at least 2 (pref more) yellow ones on the tree at any time.  They need a little water, but frequently, and frost will do for them in a flash.  All ours are established, so they don't need feeding, so I can't really advise you on that.

I've read that growing from pip is the best, but so far haven't tried.  Will do this spring, so I'll probably have to get back to you in a couple of years with an answer.

I've got one I grew from a supermarket pip in the spring and it is now a foot high, in unsuitable compost and thriving on neglect. 8)

Hi hermon, don't pour the gin and tonic just yet but the lemons are definitely worth waiting for. I grow the Meyers variety and they do take months to swell and turn yellow. In the meantime you get masses of flowers which smell gorgeous in the greenhouse every time you open the door, and lots of small fruits, most of which turn brown and drop off. Spring and autumn are the times when you are likely to get ones to pick.    8) I think there's a pic in my gallery somewhere

As far as I heard they take about 6 years. Also going to be big, like the ones Contadino grows outdoors.

The ones for sale growing here are grafted on a dwarfing stock.

If they've gone yellow, they're ready.  Maybe you have a strange type of lemon, or the plant is potbound.  Cut one open.  If it's brown inside and not very juicy, the plant's not happy.
