Shrivelled Comb - help please
« on: June 20, 2012, 20:22 »
Hello, I have just returned from 3 weeks holiday all chooks looked happy & well apart from one Leghorn whose comb was very pale & had shrivelled up to almost nothing.  This chook initially appeared to be fine eating and scratching and looked happy.  Very quickly it looked very unhappy hunched in its nest box with its head at a funny angle and its eyes closed.  It was clearly very unwell.  It is now no longer with us.  Can anyone please suggest what the cause of this was as I am concerned for my 4 other Leghorns - all of whom seem to be fine at the moment.  thanks.

 :( So sorry.
Difficult to tell for sure what was wrong without an autopsy.  Hens are very good at hiding when they are very unwell until it is too late.   Was she poohing OK?  Did you check for worms, lice or mites?

unfortunately as I had been on holiday I was not able to check as she gradually became ill, we checked the hen after she had died & could not find evidence of creepy crawlies although was quite thin.  I think we shall just have to put it down to experience & keep a care ful eye on the 4 other birds. thanks for replying
