Peas & Pea Weevil Advice Needed
« on: June 09, 2012, 06:42 »
Hi

I started my first lot of peas in cells and planted them in my allotment once they where about 4inches tall. They soon got attacked by pea weevils. They have survived but dont appear to have grown much.

I am going to sow my maincrop peas directly in the ground but am worried the weevil will get them as soon as they emerge.

Any advice on growing peas and preventing pea weevil would be appreciated.

Thanks
Steve

Morning!

They should grow through it, given a bit of time. Mine get it every year. Prevention, (I know it's too late now), is by covering the young crop with fleece or fine mesh. You can give them a dose of something like "Bug Clear" if you wish. My peas get them every year, but I don't bother.

I don't like sowing at this time of year, whilst there is time for peas to crop, they are more prone to pea moth and mildew. I've only had a half decent crop from one out of for times I've tried a late sowing, so never bother now.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Thanks for the advice DD. when do you normally sow your maincrop?
