Rambler or climber -Which Rose
« on: June 02, 2012, 21:43 »
The back of our garden, about 30 feet from the house, is bounded by a dark oak panelled fence, 6ft high about 50 ft. long, owned by our good neighbours. About 18 inches in front of that I've put in posts and 6ft x 2ft trellis panels at the top, just higher than the fence. Fence is in sun from 11am until 5pm.
We would like to have roses climb up the posts and then at 5ft spread out along the the trellis. (Would plant tall perrenials between the posts). Would like a long flowering season, scented if possible, not all the same colour or variety.
Are in Cambridgeshire, not in a frost pocket, on good draining sandy soil. Warering not a problem.
Do we need climbers or ramblers and any suggested varieties please.

Thanks

Would like a long flowering season,

Then you should get a climbing rose.

Rambling roses have a short flowering season usually only flowering in June.

Most ramblers only flower once in early summer, but usually have a huge number of blooms at once.

Climbers do have a good display in June, but not as many flowers at once as ramblers. Most of them flower intermittently after that or repeat flower in the autumn.

Roses I can personally recommend are Mme Alfred Carriere a scented white climber, New Dawn a pink climber which seems to be in flower all summer, it only has a slight scent though and Alister Stella Gray a yellow rose, with good perfume.

is very helpful (even if you don't buy from them) as you can choose colour & height etc on left-hand side and it sorts them out for you ;)

Some roses can be used as climbers, such as Gertrude Jeykll and Buff Beauty, and would be more controllable than a rambler too.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.
