I planted some Christmas varieties in tubs in August, then moved into the greenhouse in October and got a crop around early November time
All the way from my allotment in beautiful Derbyshire. I'm in year 3 of my allotment and wish I'd caught the bug years ago, things growing from strength to strength

So as long as you keep away from frost / cold it should be ok?

Just be aware that outside as they are late they are more prone to blight and one whiff of frost they'll be a gonner.

You really need to container grow them and have somewhere to move them inside when it gets cold.

Personally I can never see the attraction as I love my mash & almost black roast tatties at that certain time of year that we can't mention for over 6 months.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Done a good bit of re search in this last night and it doesn't seem a good choice, the yields are pretty poor by the looks and a lot of people have failure.

With this been my first real year I think I'll just stick to what I have in at the moment, when do you guys plan the winter crops?

One of my neighbours (elderly lady) shoves the odd spud in the ground throughout the summer.  They are just the sprouted ones she gets left over from her shopping.  She digs them up as they flower to get a supply of new potatoes and they do quite well for her.

Hers are planted in odd gaps in the border, so she seems to get away without disease problems - not sure I would risk it on the plot  :)

As regards winter crops, remember that most veg just stand in the winter and don't actually grow, so you will need to get sowing soon for winter stuff  ;)  Alternatively, if you feel you have missed the boat, or don't have room for a seed bed, most of the seed companies do collections of baby winter veg plants that they send out during the summer - leeks, cabbage, sprouting brocolli, kale, sprouts, caulies ....

I was given some nicely chitted Desiree and Kestrel last June. I planted them expecting nothing much, but ended up with quite a good crop off them. Which was nice.
