Early spud space once lifted
« on: May 18, 2012, 08:45 »
Hi guys what do you do with the space that comes available when you lift your early spuds?

What sort of things can be grown so they don't interfere with rotation plans?  I'm following the 5 year rotation off here.

And would anything need adding to the soil to replenish what the spuds have used?

Cheers

I put in leeks or winter cabbage - you can do squash or courgettes if you grow them on in large pots.
Dwarf French beans also work here.

A sprinkling of Blood, Fish & Bone if foxes arent a problem or Growmore if they are.

Last year I sowed spinach, spring onions and beetroot, as well as more carrots.

All worked well and gave a decent crop

Year before it was leeks but last year they went in after the Autumn onions... alliums all together for the year  ;)

You may get a chance to grow a late double row of broad beans, but you have to be quick!

Otherwise, it's Kale, and perhaps a late row of Kohl Rabi!

I'm putting tomatoes and aubergines in my early spud bed, but that's in a polytunnel. Been eating the spuds for more than a week and they're all ready to come up, perfect timing for the tender stuff.

The weather has not been helpful so far this year for those hoping to get their first earlies out of the way ASAP for a follow-on crop - I'll be planting out my leeks after the Lady Christl are harvested (which will probably be OK the way my leeks are also performing so far!)  ::)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I put in leeks last year and chose the variety Bleu de Solaise, which is a later on.  They did very well.

I rotavated in manure before I planted my (outside) first earlies, guess I'll have to give carrots and beetroot a miss in case of 'forking'.  :(

It won't be until next year that I'll be able to plant any roots in that bed, the soil will still be too 'rich', will it??
