Broad bean rust/ chocolate spot
« on: May 17, 2012, 21:01 »
Have noticed today that our BB have small browny red dots on the leaves. Have googled pics for rust and spot and they look very similar. The plants are not covered by any means, but most leaves have a few of these dots. Anyone had anything similar and what to do?

Hi, I have had black spot on my broad beans every year I have grown them (about 5) and it has never killed them, I have always got a crop from them.  So I don't think it is too bad.  But hopefully more experienced members will give you some more information.  :)   Much worse than the black spots are the black flys, and this year I have pinched the tops of them before any infestation, fingers crossed this will stop the blighters >:(

mine are 6 feet tall now and fearing the rust as well because of the rainny weather. google says it normally happen towards the end of the harvest and its damage is minimium. only warning is not to compost the plants after harvest. as it might past to next year's plants if compost is used.

I usually get chocolate spot, but they're always fine.  I've not had it this year mind, I've put it down to being a bit more generous with the fertilizer before I planted them in the autumn.

Chocolate spot develops in very humid conditions and April certainly provided that.

It will do no harm unless we get hot and humid weather when it can become aggressive and the spots develop and join together killing the leaves. Hopefully it will not come to that before you eat the beans. You may find that it develops on the pods but it will not affect the beans inside.
