Do I need to protect young spinach plants from birds?

We've never had a problem with birds pecking or pulling spinach, but that isn't to say you never will. :)

I'd at least cover it til it's got going and is big enough to cope with the cut and thrust of the big wide veg garden

I have to keep everything covered as we have every creature in Christendom predating our veg  :nowink:

Especially Popeye! ;)

Our spinach seems to have survived the wet and wind and is growing slowly but steadily.

If it doesn't get eaten it gets hoiked out

Failing that it gets undermined by moles.  It's a jungle out there  :D

I don't net my spinach and the birds seem to leave it alone.  Perhaps they are like the rest of my family who don't like spinach?!!

Perhaps it might depend on the type of spinach grown?

My Swiss Chard is normally ignored by everything including Mrs Plots.... as is perpetual spinach.

On the other hand some types of "baby leaf" spinach may prove quite attractive as its leaves are more tender.

Bordeaux, Fiorana F1 hybrid, Picasso and Tirza can be relatively sweet by comparrison and as soft as lettuce.

Having waffled on......none of mine is netted but the foxes have reduced our local pigeon population.
