Will I ever get eggs?
« on: October 30, 2007, 20:50 »
Hi all

I got my two chickens around 19th June when they were 9 and 8 weeks respectively (well thats what the breeder said). So here we are 4 months or so down the line and I still haven't had any eggs! The breeder guy said that they would start to lay at about 18 weeks. Well by my guesstimation we are way past that now. Any further info would be great. Thanks

What breed are they? POL is usually around 24 weeks I think.

What are you feeding them that can also make a difference.

I am feeding them Layer Pellets, corn and just general scraps (healthy chicken scraps that is) greens (mainly lettuce) and they dig about the soil for grubs and stuff too.  Their breeds are a Black Rock and a Columbine. I did wonder if the cold had something to do with it!

my frizzle bantam is 23 weeks old tomorrow, i know because she was hatched here and i wrote it in my diary (sad, i know)

and she hasnt started to lay yet. i have noticed her liitle comb getting a little redder so im expecting her first egg anytime soon.

im sure that their combs get redder and darker as they get nearer to start laying - i could be wrong and im certain someone with more experience will either confirm that or laugh at me for thinking it soon,.

Ah, yes thank you for that.  I remember now reading somewhere about the combs and wattles getting redder.  Well on the Black Rock (Annie) these have developed quite a lot recently so maybe we might be due an egg soon. fingers crossed

its so frustrating waiting for them to lay that first egg, isnt it?

im waiting on 5 different hens to start.

its no good squishing them to see if one pops out, i tried, it doesnt work.
you just get pooped on

Mine are 28 weeks old now and I've just had my first egg today (yay!) so hang on in there.  Their combs have been red now for a couple of weeks so I think the shortening days and the cold have played their part.  Though I will say that the one I think laid it has been acting kind of funny for a week or so - not sleeping on her perch and making a big mess of the straw in the house and just standing in the garden at times rosey like mad lol and they are usually really quiet!

we had our first egg today too from marge.Alot bigger than doras first egg. She has been going rigid and sort of stooping down when we go to pick her up for the last two days.Dont know if that was a sign or not but its great to have two eggs instead of one.The kids fight over whos day it is to collect them. Its nice to see them just as excited as me in the morning, they dont mind getting up since we had the chooks.

Hi all

Just an update to my own question! today when I went to let the girls out there was one perfectly formed brown egg waiting for me. So I poached it and me and my hubby shared it for breakfast. It was lovely :) Now I await an egg from my other girl
