Heritage Strawberry Varieties
« on: May 03, 2012, 14:49 »
I just read this article on the beeb http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-17912734 and it got me to thinking about the flavour of the strawberries my dad used to grow when I was a kid. I don't think I've tasted anything like it for 35 years. So I thought why not grow an old variety, but I haven't got a clue where to start. Anyone got any suggestions?

welcome to forums. a good place to start would be google  :). you will certainly find people recommend some over here.
Please add your location to your profile so that people will give location specific advice as well  :)

Try some of the specialist fruit nurseries as they have a wider range than the local nurseries.

My preference is for Royal Sovereign, Cambridge Favourite & Florence.  Also wild strawberry although you need loads of berries to make one mouthful!

i agree with agatha one of the best strawberry's i have tasted was a wild one, they are only small but they more than make up for it in their flavour. ;)

I've grown alpine strawberries from seed this year and just planted out a couple of dozen. Probably not enough plants to get a good mouthful of fruit but the taste is said to be exceptional.

Don't know where I'm going to put all the rest of the them though. The seed is tiny and I ended up with hundreds of seedlings.

Put them anywhere there's a gap - they make good ground cover ;)

I've got a client who has an area about 5 feet x 10 that is covered with strawberries including alpines.  She doesn't like the alpines so says I can help myself to any of those berries after I've picked the 'real' (?!) strawberries for her...so I spend a blissful 10 minutes browsing every time I go there in strawberry season  :)
