I normally sow my French and runner beans indoors, but this year I tried putting the pots straight out in my polytunnel. It still only took two weeks for them to germinate. And last night I recorded a low of 3.5 degrees in my tunnel, and that was under fleece as well as inside the tunnel. Didn't seem to bother the beans though, and nor did it bother the tomato, squash or courgette plants. Be interesting to see if not starting them off indoors makes them any more robust, but I'd have thought it would be less of a shock for them to move outdoors from there.

With a reserve of two kilos of seed, numbers are no problem!

i only have 45 bean seeds, im going to sow in paper pots and then transplant out once hardened off into my 42 ltr trugs and create a wigwam the same as you've done, i hope anyway.

the runners I started off too early are now in the polytunnel in large pots, along with sweetpeas. Fingers crossed they won't get too cold at night. I've started some more off at home and also have my french beans growing nicely on the windowsill.

WOW they are advanced!  mine look nothing like that... they actually look pretty poorly if I'm honest, I've never grown them before, will be leaving them in situ and seeing what happens...

mine were eaten nearly to death in the polytunnel by something. I moved the pot outside a couple of days ago with the intention of getting rid of them and reusing the compost, and today they have flowers on them! So I've removed a lot of dead leaves and will see how they get on. In the meantime I have some more seedlings which will go out in a couple of weeks.

Planted 10 plugs, Firestorm. Red flowers, stringless, self pollinating and should do well during our ??dry summer.

I don't have runners, but I have two pots of french dwarf, and one big tub with french climbers (blauhild and nekargold).  Despite the seed being "out of date" I have 100% germination on the dwarfs and the blauhild... just waiting for the nekargold now :)

I did not realise that a self fertilising runner bean had been produced. I was looking at the picture of the flowers thinking there will not be any insects in this wet weather to pollinate them.

I sowed mine yesterday. I've been bothered that I hadn't done them but with all this rain & now the wind has reached us I am quite relieved that they are somewhat later than I would normally do them.

I hope the wind has been kind to them?

Mine are keeping their heads down...just thinking about heading up the bean poles.
