Raspberry Roots
« on: April 26, 2012, 15:21 »

Hello,

Please can you advise me on the best way to plant raspberries on a poor soil site? I plan to have raised wooden beds, do raspberries require a deep root system?

Thank you.

No, raspberries are actually shallow rooted. To do well, they appreciate the best soil you can give them. If you're on poor soil now, try to make a trench of at least 6" deep and the same wide, and fill with rotted manure, peat if you can get it, compost, some bone meal, etc and set the roots in and water well.

They'll even take in the poor soil provided their root area is watered first, but improving the trench will really get them going well.

No they are shallow rooting and if planted too deep will probably die. A good layer of well rotted manure with a 4in layer of topsoil mixed with sharp sand is what i used. Be careful when weeding because of the shallow roots the hoe can easily slice through them.
