Another coop question - Vents
« on: April 18, 2012, 17:01 »
Hi,
The build continues.  I'm debating the best way to ventilate the coop.  I've seen simple meshed holes with/without a sliding wood cover and similar.  There's cheap vents like this......http://www.screwfix.com/p/manrose-rectangle-white-229-x-76mm-adjustable-vent/11104
I'm open to guidance and thoughts.

What about a window?  Seems to be 2 camps on this one!

Don't bother with a window, they don't need them.
As for your vents I'm not sure you would get enough air flowing through them I'm afraid. They do need quite a good air circulation otherwise you can get all sorts of illnesses  :(
Staffies are softer than you think.

the ventilation on one of my wooden bought coops  has a row of  holes drilled about the size of a 10p piece and then a wooden slide cover so you can adjust the ventilation.

on my other coop, there is ventilation in the roof, the piece of wood that runs along the top centre  of the coop where the apex meet is height adjustable and fixed with wing nuts. I much prefer this one as not only is it ventilation to consider but heat in the summer (and as heat rises it can go through the roof) I appreciate that this works on the basis that it is an apex roof

perhaps if you could find something of a similar product but with bigger holes and also put one in both sides so the air can flow through

hope this helps
(dont forget to consider hidey holes for red mite etc although if you have red mite they'll find somewhere to loiter)
