Chicken Behaviour
« on: April 16, 2012, 11:39 »
I have just started keeping chickens I have 5 pure breeds and a welsummer cockerel.  They are all individual characters, quite tame. and will eat out of my hand etc.  The Cream Legbar is the tamest. She will let me pick her up  and often sits on my knee for ages. I keep all my poultry supplies in the shed and they all know that the food is in there too, albiet in plastic boxes.  I often leave the shed door open and they are used to going in.  Today however I found that the Cream Legbar (Sugar...I know - you shouldnt give them names....)  decided she wanted to get into the open bag of woodshavings and has made herself very comfy.  She is picking up the shavings and covering her back with them (wish I could show you the pic)   What behaviour is she showing???

She is probably broody and getting her nest area sorted ready to sit  :)
Staffies are softer than you think.

If the shavings are dry and warm she is probably dust bathing  She'll be having a lovely time  and showing '' happy chicken '' behaviour.

For some reason some of mine love plastic which i find strange

My theory is that in the long distant past when her ancestors were running around in the jungle a nesting hen would camouflage herself with leaves and twigs from around her.

Either that or just because all females need to move stuff around every 10 mins. :)

One of mine always appears with bits of straw and bedding on her back after she's laid an egg, so I think it could well be a half hearted attempt at camouflage!  :D
Hens - Clara (Bluebell) & little newbies Martha (Black Sussex) & Dora (Speckled Maran)
RIP Margot, Geraldine, Hettie,  Ruby & Tilly :(
Cats - Herbie (LH black moggy) Louie (Seal Point Ragdoll) Jazzi (Dilute Torbie) Peggy (g&w stray)
RIP Ollie (Seal Point Ragdoll) :(

One of mine has started to take twigs into the nest box, i think she has been paying too much attention to the magpies.
