advice on planting garlic
« on: October 26, 2007, 11:50 »
Hello everyone  just to ask some advice on planting garlic.
I have bought 2 x garlic Solent Wight bulbs and would like to know what kind of soil I might need and is it best to grow in tubs or ground.
I have never grown garlic before and would love to have some success with it. :o
I have just done my first year veg growing and did pretty well with my first crops, so going to try more next year.
Any help and advice needed
God made rainy days so gardeners could get the housework done

This is for hardneck varieties (softneck can be shallower and closer)

It should be planted now in a fertile site, can plant up until end of November. Plant 2 to 3" deep and 6" apart. Allow 8" or more between rows. A mulch of rotted manure will help to suppress late weeds and will feed the crop too. Final crop will be 4'6" to 5' tall. Keep weed-free throughout. Remove seed stalks (scapes) as soon as a seed head is visible (approx June). Scapes are edible incidentally.

If LBS doesn't mind me jumping in (or abbreviating her name to a measure of weight)

if one wanted to grow the garlic in tubs, how deep would they need to be and would anything extra need to be added to help with drainage etc?

Plant the same depth, or a bit deeper (another inch or so), same good soil, holes drilled at the tub bottom - which means you'll have to water a bit more often in dry weather and keep in full sun. I wouldn't use a tub under 2 ft deep as garlic roots can get pretty large. After harvest, dispose of soil and fill with fresh.

I've grown garlic in half-barrels and I did get a reduced, but worthwhile, crop.  I'd concur with Trillium's advice above since these barrels were probably only about 16" deep.

I re-use the soil but treat it like any other rotation (I tend to re-use to grow J Art)

Rotatation in barrels? Blimey, WG, you are a Scot  :!:

I suggest fresh soil each year in the tub if Hodgey wants to grow garlic every year in the tub, which is probably what he/she wants.
