Hi all Newbie Basingstoke

My allotment is in what was the builders yard when the area was built the soil is very heavy to work. It was suggested to me to use sand to lighten it can anyone please help which sand to use thanks.

I think you would need what is known as sharp sand.

If the soil is mainly clay, then yes you can add sharp sand - but actually, organic matter over time is the best solution.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Or even both sharp sand and organics. I too live in Basingstoke and this approach was needed to increase the depth of a scant 5" of clay on chalk.
