Hello,

I've ordered two bluecrop blueberry plants from Thompson & Morgan that need planting out. I know that the bigger container I use, the bigger the plant will be. My question is should I plant it out in a smaller pot first and then transfer to the larger container, or just stick it straight in a large one.

Also, is Ericaceous compost on its own best, or should I use equal parts of it with John Innes #2?

If the plant is very tiny, then starting in a pot of a size that allows a couple of years' growth will save the possibility that the compost unoccupied by by roots could sour. AFter that move up to a larger pot.

You can judge the size by the spread of the plant -- you only need about six inches either side of soil past the spread of the branches. This will give plenty of growing space.

Regarding the compost: ericaceous compost on its own will be best. Don' forget to feed our blue berries next spring --- azalea food is suitable
