Is it a cold or worms?
« on: October 23, 2007, 14:43 »
I'm hoping someone much more knowledgable can help.  My mum has 3 ex-battery, 6 somethingoranother Goldline and 4 French blue marrans and a couple of bantams.  They are very free range, but friendly too.  We've noticed that a few at a time seem to be a bit snuffly and sneezy.  It started in an ex-battery, then a couple of the Goldline started sneezing a bit and sounding a bit snotty and now one of the new marrans has started too.  They don't gape or appear unwell at all, but we were wondering if chicken just get the sniffles and pass it around or if it could be something more sinister like parasites or worms.  Perhaps someone with experience could give us a bit of guidance.

Thanks a lot.

It's not worms if they are snotty and sneezing !  They may have colds which will go but the serious danger is secondary infection.  If they don't recover they may need antibiotics.

I presume they have been treated by you for worms anyway, if not you should do it as a precaution.

Hi All, sorry to pop out of Lurkville like this, but ....

I'd keep the ones with the lurgi separate if you can.
I managed to introduce the "cold" into my flock a while back and it hung around for ages. Some of the old girls really never seemed the same after.

I found that leftover cat antibiotics (those tiny pink pills) cut into quarters and crushed helped really sick chickies get over it, that and lots of TLC and warmth.

Hope that's some help!!!
