New allotment - just a bit of advice.........
« on: March 22, 2012, 21:48 »
Hi All!
Just go a brand spanking new allotment rotherham area - 20 new plots just been added to existing allotments @ 250sq metres. Its just blank canvas nothing on it just ploughed soil. Were going to work it as a family and ive grown veg last 2 years in garden so have a little  experience.
What I want to know is what is the best and most effective way to fence it off which is cost effective? thinking wire fencing or pallets?
They do have problems with foxes and rabbits as its in a rural area.
Will be asking more questions im sure!
Thanks all  :D

If you cast your eye over the existing allotments you may gain some ideas.  Whatever you use, make sure you don't hand over cash !  (allotment golden rule number 2)

I would refrian from pallets as they would cut down the sunlight in the morning / evening. and if they fell over onto your newly planted spring cabbages.  .  .  .  .

Keep the questions short and simple and a quick re-read before you hit the post button to see if all info' is there.    Cheers,   and welcome.     Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

As regards rabbit proofing, pallets won't do the job.  You need a solid barrier or decent wire which has been dug into the ground to a certain depth and ideally turned through 90 degrees to stop digging underneath.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
