On of these selfseeded last year on the plot.
It survived the winter and I decided it I'd like it in the garden at home as it's pretty.

The root must go down forever, I got about 18ins of it, will it grow from the bit I've got or isn't it worth planting, does anyone know?

I've not grown bronze myself but my sources indicate the root hates disturbance and is likely not to grow, but you can always try.

Perhaps this year you'll find more volunteer seedlings that will be easier to transplant. Apparently the swallowtail butterflies love bronze fennel as do many pollinators.

Yes, seedlings will be easier (and more willing to co-operate).  However, just a word of warning - they're very generous with their seed, so you'll probably find them sprouting all over the place!

I'll have to buy some seed then, a shame, unfortunately I don't know where it came from in the first place

It might survive alright --- I have transplanted the green variety OK, so I guess the bronze one is likely to manage about the same

I've transplanted Bronze fennel - so give it a go, you've only a bit of your time to loose, and yes I have seedlings everywhere, but I don't mind it is pretty and the pollinators love it.
