« on: March 14, 2012, 23:45 »
am based in canterbury kent, still very mucj a novice.
with regard to onions i put some over wintering onions in last year reds and whites all the reds seem to have disappeared the whites are ok, nothing to get worked up about.
if i bought some sets now, would they be ok? am thinking with regard to more frost......what is the latest i can plant onion sets?

same for the potatoes should i plant them or wait abit longer?

Hi, there's still time to plant your onion sets- a variety like red baron are nice and keep well.

Still a little early for potatoes. End of March and into April for planting those.

I always plant a row of early potatoes on St Patrick's day (17th March) but as well as the regular earthing up as they grow, I can cover them if a late frost is forecast  :)

Disappeared!  It could be moles dragging them underground as they go about burrowing all over the place. If you look round your plot you might find them in all sorts of odd places. Very annoying!  Birds will hoik them out too but you'd be able to see them lying on the soil surface

I planted some red onion sets the other day  :)

Potatoes I'd leave for a bit yet as it's still v cold overnight

I planted some red and white onion sets last autumn. I lost a few red ones and no white, so i suspect the reds may be a little more delicate.
