horse dung
« on: March 05, 2012, 20:04 »
I have been offered a load of horse dung , however this is just the dung and is just like composted grass wet and slimey totaly unsuitable just to dig in like normal stable manure . I can compost it but will struggle to mix it with enough "brown material " unless I use just cardboard or would you use it as a top dressing / mulch over the summer or say no thanks to any quantity of it as its just as raked of the paddock
This is the first age that has ever paid much attention to the future which is ironic since we may not have one !(Arthur c Clarke)

I don't know what has happened, but horse dung, even without hay/chipping or straw,  is not usually green and slimey

No its brown in colour but the grass in it is still recognisable and its just not a nice crumble so its very difficult to mix into the soil

You can just compost it on it's own. Cover the pile to keep rain off and turn it once or twice. It should make lovely stuff in a few months.

Double check that the grass has not been treated with the herbicide aminopyralid or clopyralid - if it has then don't touch it with the proverbial bargepole as it will cause some of your crops to not thrive or die.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
