Mould help
« on: February 27, 2012, 10:23 »
I've had my coop built up for a month now (no chooks yet) and when I had a look inside the other day there was a few round patches of mould growing on the inside of the roof. I had left the vent open but one of my young daughters must have been playing around with it.

Can anybody advise what is the best product/fungicide to use to get rid of the mould and would it also treat the inside of the coop to prevent further growth.

I'm getting my chooks in a couple of weeks so would like to make sure that the mould is gone.

Thanks  :)

Was thinking about washing it with bleach and I've read somewhere that appling ACV after is also good to help prevent it.

Anybody? Please.

I would like my coop sorted out in the next few days to allow it to dry out before I bring my girls home.

TY

If you've got mould I would say almost certainly their not enough ventilation.
I have no closure on the vents in my coop, their open 24/7.Good ventilation is essential for hens.
I would Just use bleach water to remove the mould..Aden..

it sounds like yopu need more ventilation, to get rid of the mold itself i used milton fluid (for baby botles) worked great since then i doubled the amount of ventilation and had no more problems  :D

Tony H - I only had the vent open halfway. Not sure when my daughters closed it over, it may have been the same day.  I may have some milton in the bottom of my cupboard, thanks.

has the timber not been treated with preservative? I would get rid of the mould and give it a good coating.

Joyfull - the coop was advertised as being made of treated wood and my hubby said it would be fine (last time I listen to him), it does look like it's been made from tanalised wood.  I'm just trying to source some creosote the now for it.

do not use creosote - it has been banned except for professional use. It is carcinogenic. Find a treatment that is bat friendly.

I had heard that creosote was the best treatment for redmite?  ???

Do you have any suggestions for another treatment, please?

Paraffin for redmite   ;)
Paint it in the cracks and nooks crevices etc.

Easy and works well.

Hi joyfull, my thinking was that the creosote would treat the wood and prevennt red mite (I wouldn't be able to use it again once my girls move in so was going to use the slurry mix recipe I found on here to prevent/treat red mite from then on). I guess I'm looking for the best product to treat the wood. ty.

Hi creasote is the best but as joyfull said it is now banned, one of the reasons is that it is toxic to animals, plantlife and the soil, I do use it in places (roof) where chucks cant get to it but i wouldnt use it in the coop, there are a lot of fence guards out there that are good and best of all comes in lots of nice colours, I let the kids paint the fence its now blue
I put my foot down to bright pink though  :tongue2:
