2 questions in one. Pink Fir Apples and Brussels
« on: February 19, 2012, 18:53 »
No 1: I bought some P.F.Apples today and when I got them out to start them chitting I realised they are not potato shaped .
Do you just lay them down because I thought you had to put potatoes the right way up.

No 2: My Brussel seeds have sprouted ,where do I put them now?(They've been in the spare bedroom). In one of the pots they had lifted approx 4mm of soil up like a crust and 2 had grown aroud the side of it ,what had I done wrong?

Thank you in advance for your forebearance with my dumb questions

yeh i know what you mean pink fir apple are odd shaped, to be honest it was a few years ago since i grew them and from what i recall i just put them in egg boxes so they where standin up - i didn't bother checking which way until they started to shoot and if the shoots grow downwards swap them around so they are growing upwards.

as for question 2  - i think the soil risking up was caused by the soil being to dry?

I agree with matt's suggestion that the soil was a bit too dry, and so the seedlings have lifted it up as they germinated.

Sprouts donlt need warmth, so keep them somewhere as cool as you can without risking being frozen.

If this means indoors on a windowsill, donl forgte they need as much light as possible, without being in direct sun.

You can make a reflector out of foil lined cardboard to stand in front of them so that they get light from both sides.

Hope that helps

PS Potatoes chit whichever way up the are, so no worries there about PFA  :)

PFAs (I grow them every year) have a definite "rose" end.  They are very slow to chit and don't ever grow very long chits - for me any way.

They've got a "belly button" end as well!

And, yes, they're not the keenest of spuds to send out chits.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

if the shoots grow downwards swap them around so they are growing upwards.

The shoots won't grow downwards as they respond to light in a process called phototropism.  Roots always grow downwards in a process called geotropism where they respond to gravity.

If any fluff gets in the belly button gently ease it out with a damp cotton bud.  ;)
