Each year I grow 3 rows early, 3rows 2nd early and 6 rows main and that takes us in to the new year. 20' rows with spacing at 18" and less for early/2nd early. Last year I grew one row of early and two rows in pots. I use the supermarket cut flower pots, one seed in each pot.
I am preparing the pots now, and I have got Rocket seed chitting nicely. I will plant them next month depending on weather conditions, but if a frost is forecast then I can move the pots to safety.
I had quite good results, but there is extra work particulary with watering.  When you empty the pots, refill with the same soil and sow carrots. I still have 10 pots to empty and the carrot crop in the best I have ever had.
My potatoes this year: Early :-Rocket and Lady Christi; 2nd early:- Charlotte and Kestrel and maincrop:-  Sarpo M, Cara and Disiree

The black pots that the supermarkets display their flowers in, they either give them away when asked or charge a squid for about 10 of 'em  ;)
They're great for growing tomatoes and peppers in too :)

The problem in answering the question, is the variability amongst growers as regards space, (hence other crops taking priority), appetite of the family and hangers on, etc., etc.,

It's taken me a few good years to decide what my individual requirements are, and I suspect the same will be for you.

I won't post what I'm planting, as it will cloud the issue further, but you've got some good starting points from what others have posted, which I never had.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I always buy too many seed tubers. I've still about four sacks of spuds left from last year and I've given two away. I might have cracked it this years as I've bought sparingly so far.

Better too many than not enogh :tongue2: Like you said Upert 'You can always give them away'. I'm always grateful if I receive any produce from someone.
Maybe this year I'll be the one giving things away :D
