I am planting up a comfrey bed this year. I want to plant the flowering comfrey to encourage insects, but how wild is it? Will it it start cropping up everywhere or shall I go for Bocking 14?

The plan is to plant it in its own semi-raised bed at the bottom of my plot in almost full shade. My plot is also next to the boundry of the site.

What I have done is plant it in the soil inside a large pot to contain it. It has done ok so far :-)

comfrey will spread..

use blocking 14 type less invasive but it will spread but not as bad as normal comfrey
buy root cuttings pott up as soon as establised plant out..

comfrey is a great organic fertilizer as well as attracting bees and polinators to the plot..

if you want to attract bees also plant borage, sweet peas , lavender, etc.

I'd certainly go for Bocking 14. I planted seven root cuttings in spring last year and so far no problems. Took two or three cuttings even though this isn't recommended for the first year. I've noticed the large root growth already. There's an area of our site where the non-bocking 14 variety grows and that has become rampant and a nuisance.
