Soft Seed Potatoes
« on: February 15, 2012, 20:43 »
I recently received my spuds from a well known seed supplier. I am no expert mind but a great deal of the seeds are rather soft and a number were actually rotted when I opened the bag. I have had them on the window sill for over a week and they are chitting ok but i am slightly worried that the softness may mean they are diseased therefore i wont get much if anything from them, am i worrying for nothing?

Complain to the supplier and ask for replacements.

Sounds a lot like mine post-frostbite! Perhaps they weren't properly stored at the supplier's depot? Hope they sort it for you!

You might be worrying about nothing. If soft as in wrinkly and not firm, they might well be absolutely fine. A piccie always helps more, if worried.

Thanks guys and as i said they appear to be chitting ok on the window ledge so i may just stick with them and see how it goes, though i think i should still give the supplier a call and see what they have to say! :)

If they're rotting you'll soon know about it as rotting spuds stink!

If they're merely getting a bit wrinkly they'll probably be OK but may be getting a bit too much warmth and/or light (cool and north-facing window is the best situation, but whatever else you do don't subject them to either frost or darkness now.)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Got them on a North facing window ledge, so fingers crossed.
