Spring Cabbages... Oops..
« on: February 11, 2012, 18:22 »
I bought a 3 variety Cabbage seed pack and didn't realise Spring Cabbages are to be grown from July and then over wintered... Would they grow as a normal summer crop or am I being stupid!!
Now a member of the 10 Ton club.... 2013  harvested 588 Kg from 165 sq mt..

Don't see why not.

I grow "April". It also says "Sow March-May for use in autumn".

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

As DD says a lot of Spring cabbage varieties can be grown in two seasons. Spring cabbage varieties are hardy enough to stand the Winter. Mind you, the -16C in Holbeach last night will test them.

Yes, that is cold, we were -10 degrees this am, and everything looked pretty sick...

Except for the brussels!

We have some Durham Early growing, and they're not thriving, but that could be because clubroot is a bit of a problem in some hot-spots.

The last couple of nights have definitely done for my chard, look dead as a doornail. Next year I'll keep a couple of plants in my tunnel over winter so I can keep them going.

My chard looked done for on the plot today as well, but I know it will reshoot and I'll get a few more pickings before they bolt this spring.

I've also sown spring cabbage this time of year for a later than usual crop when my overwintering crop got it's net blown off and the pigeons did for it  ::)  I started them in the cold greenhouse and then planted them out once they were sturdy little plants under cloches, then net and they worked fine.  Worth a go Gavin and maybe a few later for an autumn crop :D
