BEETROOT
« on: February 10, 2012, 18:35 »
I don’t seem to have much luck with beetroot.  This is my 3 season on my allotments, nothing had been grown there for about 40 years when I got it.
I have had cabbage, runner beans, potatoes, rhubarb, fruit bushes etc,but am
not very good with beetroot. Cant wait to get started again this year. Any hints on beetroot thanks.

Hi Glenys, welcome to the forums.

A few things, please don't post in capitals, it can be hard for some of our members to read. I've amended the text.

I've moved this into GYO where more of our members are likely to see it and offer advice.

I know you mentioned your location in the body of the post, but it is helpful if you can put it in your profile.

Please pop back to the Welcome Forum and introduce yourself.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

This is a very easy to grow crop, so puzzling. Tell us, how you do it. :D

Do you get them to germinate? They need warm moist soil so it pays not to sow them too early, or too late if it turns out to be a dry summer.

If they don't grow big enough you need manure the previous year to build up the fertility of the soil.

I wouldn't say its easy I have grown it for four years but not every year has been successful I personally think it s a bit tricky, but I can grow caulis which some people struggle with  :)
some people are like slinkys......they're really good for nothing, but they still bring a smile to your face as you push them down the stairs!!

i germinate them in a tray and then transfer them to a bed when they are a couple of inches tall,
i put a couple of grains of growmore in each hole when transplanting and give them a couple of weeks and away they go :)
when im with my 9yr old she's the sensible one

Beetroot like a light rich soil ph neutral, try soaking the seeds for an hour before sowing this will encourage germination, and when you sow cover with moist compost instead of soil.As was mentioned previously you must wait till the soil warms up before you sow.

I always soak mine prior to sowing, and also water the bottom of the seed drill - it seems it seems to work if I do that, and not if I don't.
