first time for leeks and onions (from seed)
« on: February 08, 2012, 13:29 »
I sowed them about 2 weeks ago now in a heated propagator some of each have come through well about 4 of each to be exact but there are no signs of the others yet and the first ones through are getting a bit leggy, they were free seeds and I have some more  so shall I try again ??

some people are like slinkys......they're really good for nothing, but they still bring a smile to your face as you push them down the stairs!!

The heat could be your problem.

John's article on onions from seed specifically mentions the fact they don't need too much:

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

seeds may have damped off have you got the vents open on your propagator, if your plants are leggy as DD said they are getting drawn and are two hot. If you are transplanting into single pots the best time is during the crook stage as they will take less of a check--then keep them out .

IMO if you dont have a lighting system for growing them, it is a waste of time using any heat for onions or leeks. When sowing them early, i sow them in modules in a bright place indoors in modules. Sowing them into modules means the critical stage at which you need to transplant them is bypassed. They have plenty of room for a while.

Thanks DD
well to be honest I did read Johns article and then completely forgot about it  I have turned the heat off and removed the lid will leave them for a few days if nothing happens I will start again not too bothered as I don't really use much in the way of leeks it was more a test really whilst bored waiting to plant the real stuff !!   :D

this is a good question because i was going to set some onion seed this week but from what's said i think i mite hold back a bit

i take your point about artificial lighting the thing is if i leave sowing my onion seed  till after February will the onions catch up i know we're only talking about a few weeks later

but the nights are beginning to get a bit lighter and perhaps i said perhaps the weather mite improve
