strawberries & blueberries!!
« on: February 06, 2012, 22:37 »
Hi everyone.

Im new to the forum and new to allotmenteering too. Had my plot since late summer so just been prepping really. Its starting to get a bit scary now the TIME is nearinng!!! ha. Anway, I had my seed delivery the other day and with that I recieved 3 blueberry plants and a pack of Strawberry runners, can anyone please advise on the best way to store these until the weather warms up for planting? Also when would be best time to plant and best conditions (soil etc).

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Steve

If you have some small pots and potting mix, you could pot up the strawberry runners now, water lightly,  and keep in a cool place until ready. The roots will oblige by setting while you wait for better weather.

The blueberries, if they're bare rooted, should be potted up in ericaceous (acidic) compost, watered and also placed somewhere cool. If they've started to leaf, then keep them somewhere warmer. If already potted and no leaves, then keep lightly watered and cool until ready. They need a cool spell to do well.

You need to aquire an old bath from a skip and fill it with ericaceous compost and a 3" layer of gravel/polystyrene for drainage ready for your Blueberries to go in equally spaced, once they've established in the pots as Trillium states

Make sure you ask permission from the skip owner or householder first!

Once the soil has thawed, plant the strawberry runners out as they are very tough indeed.

(Ours are a foot apart in each direction)

A sprinkle of blood fish and bone raked in will help them along too  :D

We have blue berries growing happily in large pots of ericaceous compost at home (plenty of water and azalea feed) and some at the plotin ericaceous soil with sulphur chips added every year to try to keep it acid, plus of course ...granular azalea feed  :D

Thanks very much for your advise, like being down the plot but at home, ha!
I'll keep you posted as to how things go! My little girl loves straws and bluebs so hopefully it will go well and save us a few quid.
Cheers
