I hope you're better at it than me! I had 7 black silkie chicks, one partridge egg must have slipped in and he is a splendid cockerel. I have been telling everyone how great it is to get 6 hens and 1 cockerel from 7 eggs...then this morning at 5 months old...one of the "hens" crowed! Apparently silkies are very difficult to sex so i won't beat myself up over it! Now I have a beautiful black silkie cockerel....seeking a new hareem! Fortunately the bigger cockerel seems quite tolerant and the newly discovered one a bit of a woos so they may be ok!

Speaking of more than one cockerell...I have 24 hens and three of my six month old "pullets" have turned out to be roosters.  So, my question is, do I keep just one rooster for 24 hens or can I keep two?  How many is too many?  One of the males is definitely leaving - his colors are way out of line with my other buffs (he has white feathers speckled all throughout his buff feathers).  He's quite odd looking.  But I really like my other two roosters and can't decide which one to do away with.  So, will two be too many for that number of girls?  I want the eggs to all be fertile, but I don't want the girls to be featherless and miserable, either.

Yeah!  Two roosters it is.  They will be so happy.  I guess the third won't be!  If my friend doesn't want him, I guess he will be Sunday dinner!

im so mad right now!!!
we got 4 chicks that we bought as hens at 1 day old, today our aracounea started to crow. pain in the butt. called the people, whata you know they may or may not give us money back  or a couple of chicks.
-If life gives you lemons find someone who got vodka and have a party
-If it doesn't fit;force it. If it breaks; you needed a new one anyway
-Borrow money from pessimist; they don't expect it back

How old is the araucuna Chicksforkicks?
I hatched 5 chicks (2x marsh daisy, 2x cuckoo maran, 1x araucuna) that are now 16 weeks old.  Fairly sure the MDs are hens, think I have one of each of the marans, but the araucuna ....?
Ugliest, scarediest, drama queen chick I've ever seen! Not a hint of aggression to any of the others (including my pekin cockerel), scared of its own feet  , but beginning to get a comb and what looks like hackle feathers. No spurs on any of them though.
The pekins I've hatched in the past were much quicker to identify - not least by their behaviour.
Am I just too impatient muntjac - what should happen first to give the game away? :?
