Tomato blight resistance?
« on: January 26, 2012, 00:44 »
Does anyone know of any varieties of (outdoor) tomatoes which are more resistant to blight? My toms were decimated last year, and I don't have a greenhouse to grow them indoors...

T&M stock seeds of tomatoes they say are blight resistant. I have sent for some seeds this year, as mine were wiped out last season too.

Not having grown them yet, I cannot say how well they stand up to blighty conditions.

I cannot see any outdoor types, but any will grow outside: they just need warmth and a bit of TLC to get them going.

Hope that helps  :D

I grew Ferline, I think about 4 years ago, possibly 5. They produced large tomatoes - until blight wiped them out. They are blight resistant, not blight proof.

I'll be taking the usual precautions this year and growing the varieties I want.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Thanks for that DD --- I shall try not to cry if their resistance is insufficient

But might have to spray them to save 'dizaaaahstah darling' after last year's disappointments

and equally to the point, srpay the spuds as well

In my case, resistance was futile.

I shall keep my trusty stock of Dithane handy, I know it works. I've never actually tried its replacement. Didn't actually need to use any last year, I just did a precautionary spray when we went away for 12 days.

The new one does have copper in  it, so might actually function (just looked it up -- could be stocked by Wilkos I think)

I've seen it in Wilcos, but I'l still got plenty of the old stuff left. It's only been withdrawn from sale, not banned. (yet).

As a footnote, the RHS say that the active ingredient, (mancozeb), has not actually been withdrawn, but the product containing it is no longer on the market:
