Honeyberry
« on: January 18, 2012, 07:22 »
This may be a silly question but do birds eat Honeyberries?  I have two plants ready for planting and wonder if they should go in the fruit cage. Space is the problem, so was hoping to plant elswhere until the bird thought struck me.
There is no better show of antisipation than a man sowing seeds in a field.

I think they do. We were going to buy a pair of plants, but fruit caging in the intended planting location was one of the constraints that stopped us. :) Price was another, in case they didn't like our climate.

Sorry to hijack lacewing - which  soft fruit, if any, do birds attack least? My goosberries did ok last year but my blackcurrents, strawberries and rasberries all got attacked to different degrees.

If you assume that aany fruit that you like to eat is also attractive to birds, you can't go far wrong  ;)

Anyone know if I can grow a single Honeyberry bush or does it need a male plant for pollenation, also how big do they grow ?    Cheers,     Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

You need two different varieties of honeyberry because they need cross pollination (it has nothing to do with male and female plants). If you only grow one plant you will have a very poor crop. If you buy honeyberries you will normally get two in a pot together. They will need about 2 years before they start cropping but mature plants can produce quite a lot of really nice tasting fruit. They will grow between 1 and 2 m high.

The fruit cage it is then. I have just dug up a large fig tree that seemed bent on takinmg over the fruit cage,   so that has freed up more space.
